Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom was the last capital of the Angkorian Empire. After the capital has been taken back by King Jayavaman VII in 1181, he began a massive campaign across the empire and built the new capital Angkor Thom. He started from existing structures such as Baphuon and Phimeanakas and added moats and a high wall around some of the most famous Angkor temples like Bayon in the heart of the city.
The city has 5 entrances, one on each cardinal point and  one on the Victory Gate near the Royal Palace. Each gate is topped by 4 giant faces. The south gate is often the first stop while a classic tour of Angkor site.
