Essential of Vietnam, 7 days

Upon arrival, welcome by the local guide at Ho Chi Minh City airport, transfer and check-in at the hotel.

Discover Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the economic capital of the country. Visit the old colonial residential quarter, including the City Hall, built from 1902-1908 in a French colonial style, Opera House, built in 1897 by French Architect Eugene Ferret, the Museum of Fine Arts (closed on Mondays), the contemporary Reunification Palace (inside) and the elegant 19th century Notre-Dame Cathedral. Then stroll around the Central Post Office, a neoclassical architectural style, built in the early 20th century by Eiffel.

Day 2     HO CHI MINH CITY – SA DEC – VINH LONG – CAI BE        (B/L/D)
After breakfast, depart towards Sa Dec in the heart of the Mekong Delta and check-in on board of L’Amant. There will be a short introduction of the crew and the ship, followed by lunch on board. In the early afternoon, visit the old-fashioned town, famous for its flowers and bonsai plants, and where the famous French Writer Marguerite Duras spent her childhood. Stroll through the lively market streets of this fascinating town, toward the tomb of L’Amant (the Lover) and his parents. Visit a Chinese temple and pass-by the school where Margerite’s mother has taught (an opportunity to interact with the students),  as well as the house where she used to live with her children. Stop to visit the ancient house of Huynh Thuy Le, the “house of the Chinese” described in Marguerite Duras’ novel “L’Amant”. Return back on board and depart to Cai Be while watching the sunset from the sundeck or enjoying a soothing foot massage (with supplement). In the early evening, the boat will anchor near Cai Be for overnight. Dinner on board followed by the projection of the film “L’Amant” or “Indochine”.

Note: The school is closed during Tet (Vietnamese New Year festival) and other public holidays.

After breakfast, check-out time, before boarding on a local boat to explore the Mekong River’s myriad of canals and the home of the famous garden - the image of the region. Then depart on a horse-drawn cart to go inland and visit the small villages. Stop, along the way, at a local home for a tropical fruit tasting and visit a bee farm before returning back on a rowing boat. Visit the craft villages, including a candy coconut factory. Later, return back by road to Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to the airport for the flight to Haiphong. Welcome by the local guide, transfer and check-in at hotel.

Day 4     HAIPHONG – HALONG        (B/L/D)
After breakfast, short city tour of Hai Phong, the most important port in the North with its colonial architecture. Visit the Du Hang Pagoda, built under the Ly Dynasty, it is considered an ancient architectural relic of the city, and Hang Kenh Communal House with its numerous wooden sculptures before continuing to the majestic Halong Bay, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Arrive in Halong by midday and board on a junk for a memorable cruise through the mystical Halong Bay. In the afternoon, navigation between the karts, some of which display extraordinary shapes, if time and weather allow, stop for a swim in the jade-colored waters of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Note: The private guide is not authorized to accompany passengers on board the junk. Therefore, during the cruise the private guide will be replaced by a local guide.

Day 5     HALONG - HANOI         (B/Brunch)
After the breakfast, junk resumes its course. During the morning, it crosses the bay and stop to visit a natural cave. Brunch will be served on board before returning on the coast around 11h00 and transfer by road to Hanoi. On the way, stop at Yen Duc village for a bucolic walk in a farm before tasting local products. Visit Canh Huong pagoda then resume the drive towards the capital. Arrive in the late afternoon and check-in at hotel.

Day 6     HANOI        (B/L)
After breakfast, explore the capital including the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed on Mondays and Fridays), where rests the remains of the national hero, the father of the nation. Then visit the one-Pillar Pagoda, a remnant of the 11th century,  and  Tran Quoc Pagoda, regarded as the most ancient pagoda of the city built in the 6th century and a  cultural symbol of Vietnamese Buddhism. Transfer to the Museum of Ethnology (closed on Monday)which focuses on the 54 officially recognized ethnic groups in Vietnam. Lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Temple of Literature, first university in Vietnam’s history. Depart by rickshaw and spend some time wandering in the old quarter and its antique shops. Then visit Ngoc Son Temple beautifully situated on Hoan Kiem Lake, and which is reached by a charming wooden bridge. The day ends by a water puppet show, featuring sketches about the daily life and beliefs of the rural people.
Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 7     HANOI        (B/L)
After breakfast, time is at leisure at hotel.
Note: Rooms shall be released by 12pm (noon).
Depending on the flight schedule, transfer to Hanoi airport for the departure flight.
