Grand Tour of Laos, 15 days

Day 1     HOUEI SAY – PAKBENG                                   (L/D)
Meet in the morning at 8 am in front of the Lao immigration office. Transfer by Tuk Tuk and board a local traditional boat for a cruise on the Mekong River towards Pakbeng. Navigation while the river traffic increases as the boat crosses an area mostly populated villages accessible only by river. Local lunch will be served on board. In the afternoon, stop to visit a typical Khamu village. Arrival at the lodge before sunset and check-in.
Dinner and overnight in Pakbeng.
Note: Boat departs on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays

Day 2     PAKBENG – PAK OU – LUANG PRABANG                              (B/L)
After breakfast, return on board and continue cruising along the river to reach the former Royal capital of Luang Prabang (approximately 6 hours according to the water level). Local lunch will be served on board. Stop to visit the sacred site of Pak Ou. Inside a cliff overlooking the river, at the exact spot where the Nam Ou flows into the Mekong, Pak Ou consists of two sacred caves housing thousands of Buddha statues. Along the way, stop at Ban Xang Hai Village, specializing in the sticky rice wine distillation. Arrival in Luang Prabang late in the afternoon and welcome by the local guide then transfer and check-in at hotel.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.

After breakfast, depart for a first discovery of Luang Prabang, the former royal capital which today is listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Explore the city with the famous Wat Xieng Thong, considered as the most beautiful temple of Luang Prabang. Its layered roofs going down to the ground make it one of the icons of the city. Visit Vat Visoun and its Singhalese-style stupa and then the former Royal Palace now a national Museum (closed on Tuesdays), which has a collection of personal items that used to belong to the Lao kings. Lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the That Makmo and Vat Aham, one of the main shrines of the city that is dedicated to the ancestors. Continue the visit to the nearby Vat Mai Temple, the residence of a Buddhist patriarch until 1975. If the weather permits, the day ends from Prabath Tai Temple in a very peaceful setting along the Mekong.

Day 4    LUANG PRABANG (KHOUANG SY)                       (B/L)
Depart from the hotel in the early morning to watch the daily procession of the monks. The people of Luang Prabang rise up at dawn and respectfully wait for the procession to give alms to the monks (in the form of food, rice, cakes, fruits…). Return back to the hotel. After breakfast, depart to the beautiful Khouang Sy waterfalls. En route, stop in hill tribe villages to meet the Hmong community. Late morning, walk towards Khouang Sy waterfalls nestled in lush tropical vegetation. Free time at leisure for swimming in one of the natural pools (if weather permits). Picnic lunch by the waterfall. In the afternoon drive back to Luang Prabang.

Day 5     LUANG PRABANG/ VIENTIANE                      (B/L)
After breakfast, visit Vat Mai Temple, the residence of a Buddhist patriarch until 1975. Then, climb up Phousi Hill for an outstanding view over the ancient Royal capital and the Mekong River. Lunch at local restaurant. Transfer in the afternoon to the airport for the flight to Vientiane. Meet upon arrival with the local guide, transfer and check-in at the hotel.

Day 6    VIENTIANE                     (B/L)
After breakfast, spend a full day touring Vientiane. Stroll through the Morning local market, the opportunity to observe the Lao daily life whom came to buy vegetables and fruits for the preparation of family meals. Then depart by road to the Buddhas Park of Xieng Khuan, located about 25 kilometers from the capital (about 45 minutes). This park brings together a multitude of sculptures of Buddha in various shapes and forms. Lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Vat Sisaket, known as the Buddha Museum, where more than ten thousands Buddha statues can be seen. Visit to Ho Phrakeo, the former Royal Chapel where the Emerald Buddha, dating back from the time of the Lane Xang Kingdom, was enshrined until it was taken to Thailand.

Day 7      VIENTIANE                            (B/L)
After breakfast, in the early morning drive to Ban Hatkhay Village. Upon arrival, welcome by the local guide then drive to Say Pha through a 7-km path leading to the rice fields before arriving at the park. The trek will start at Orchid Pha Say with views over an impressive gorge of more than 50m high and thick jungle. Then, move on small shaded trails and discover the different types of forest, such as semi-deciduous jungles, bamboos... Continue the journey with the discovery of the impressive abundance of orchids and learn many things about medicinal plants and other family of plants such as:  the canes, gingers, dypterocarpes... The day will end with a swim at Tad Say Waterfalls before returning back to the village. Then drive back to the hottel in the late afternoon.

Day 8     VIENTIANE – HINBOUN                 (B/L)
After an early breakfast, drive along the Mekong via the beautiful route to the South of Laos towards Hinboun and cross the wildest region of the country. Stop at Pakxan for a lunch break before continuing the road. Upon arrival in Hinboun, check-in at the hotel.  Transfer to the entrance of Kong Lor cave and its 7-Km underground river. Embark on a long tail boat for a unique and authentic excursion. According to the water level, stop for a walk in the cave and admire the stalagmites and stalactites. Return to the city late in the afternoon.
Overnight in Hinboun.

Day 9     HINBOUN – SAVANNAKHET                          (B/L)
After breakfast, drive to Savannakhet through a winding road along the Mekong River and between plantations and hills. Off to Thakek, the border city with Thailand and en route, stop to visit its historical heritage including the walls and French colonial houses. Near Savannakhet, visit That Ing Hang built by King Sumihatham 200 years ago. Arrive at midday for lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, explore the rich colonial past of the city. Walk through the city and its old building including old French-architecture villas.
Overnight in Sanvannakhet.

Day 10     SAVANNAKHET – THATEN                         (B/L)
After breakfast, visit the Vat Rattanalangsi, a religious center built in the middle of the twentieth century. Lunch at local restaurant before heading towards the Bolovens Plateau and the fertile region of Paksong. On the road, stop at Tad Phasaum waterfall and tribal villages before reaching the Lodge located in the middle of a coffee plantation. Check-in and free time at leisure.
Overnight at the lodge.

After breakfast, a plantation tour will help to learn more about the coffee tree, its cultivation process and the harvesting techniques. Then, depart for a half-day excursion in the Bolovens plateau. Visit a Khaleum village then stop at the impressive Tad Fane waterfall. Lunch at local restaurant facing the waterfall. In the afternoon, depart by road towards the ancient Royal capital of Champassak via Pakse.  Along the way, stop at several ethnic villages where people have preserved most of their traditional animist beliefs and customs. In Pakse, visit the important Bouddha and enjoy panoramic views over the Mekong. Arrival in Champasssak late in the afternoon and check-in at hotel.

Day 12     CHAMPASSAK                      (B/L)
After breakfast, the morning is dedicated to explore Vat Phou (8 km from the city), a pre-Angkorian temple built in the 11th century and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. On top of the hill lies a small Buddhist temple, where locals still come to pray every day. Return to hotel for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure for a cycling tour (supplement to be paid at the hotel) or just enjoy the tranquility of this region.

Day 13     CHAMPASSAK – KHONE ISLAND – KHONG ISLAND                  (B/L)
After breakfast, drive South on the National Highway 13 (1.5 hr) and board a long-tail riverboat for a cruise through the maze of waterways forming the tropical paradise of Siphandone “The 4,000 Islands”. During the rainy season, the Mekong River reaches an incredible width of 14 km and when the water recedes it leaves behind a myriad of islands and islets. Visit Det and Som Islands for a glimpse of the traditional life of the local fishermen. Stop on Khone Island for lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, discover the island’s colonial heritage including an old railway built by the French in 1897 to avoid the powerful rapids disrupting the navigation on the Mekong River. Continue to the impressive Liphi Waterfalls. Return on board and head towards Khong Island. Check-in at hotel.

Day 14     KHONG ISLAND – KHONE PHAPENG – PAKSE                   (B/L)
After breakfast, cross the Mekong River and continue by road to the famous Khone Phapeng Waterfalls, the largest waterfall on the Mekong River along its 4,350 km stretches from the Tibetan Plateau to the South East Sea. Return to Pakse by road for late lunch. In the afternoon, stroll through the city market, one of the largest in Laos. Check-in at hotel and time at leisure.
Overnight in Pakse.

Day 15     PAKSE                       (B)
After breakfast, time at leisure in Pakse. Note: Rooms shall be released by 12pm (noon). Depending on the flight schedule, transfer to the airport for the departure flight.
