Myanmar Landscapes, 9 days

Day 1    MANDALAY–RV MINGUN OR INWA             (D)    
Welcome upon arrival by the local guide at Mandalay airport. During the transfer to the city centre enjoy a first glimpse of the last royal capital of Burma.
Visit the main landmarks of the city: the pagoda of the great sage Mahamuni and its gold leaf workshops. Visit Shwenandaw monastery for its fine wooden sculptures, Kyauktawgyi Pagoda with a sitting Buddha carved from a single block of marble, and Kuthodaw pagoda. Finally, stop in a traditional gold leaf workshop.
At 4pm, board the RV Mingun in Mandalay’s jetty. Welcome drink and settle in the cabins. The ship will sail for about 1 hour towards Mingun. Passengers are invited to enjoy the sunset on the upper deck of the boat.
Dinner and night is on board.

Day 2     RV MINGUN/INWA–MINGUN–AVA–SAGAING             (B/L/D)
After breakfast, short navigation to visit Mingun village, to enjoy the site in peace before the arrival of ships from Mandalay. In Mingun, visit Pondawphaya and Settawya pagodas as well as the impressive unfinished Mantaragyi brick pagoda. It would have been the highest pagoda in the world had this project not been abandoned at King Bodawpaya’s death. The legendary Mingun bell weighing 90 tons, also manufactured by the King’s orders, is one of the heaviest intact bells in the world. At around 10am, the ship sets sail towards Ava Island before crossing the river by boat. Enjoy a horse cart ride through the former princely city. Visit Maha Aungmyay Bonzan monastery and the beautiful wooden monastery of Bagaya. In the afternoon, continue near sacred Sagaing hill, dotted with temples and pagodas with white and gold domes among century-old tamarind trees. Exclusive barbecue dinner on the river beach facing Sagaing hill.

Day 3     RV MINGUN/INWA–MANDALAY–KALAW                          (B/L)
After breakfast, the cruise ends in Mandalay. Depart by road through the beautiful and typical countryside of the Shan State to reach the peaceful town of Kalaw (approximately 6h), a former British colonial hill station. Nestled in the Shan mountains at 1300m altitude, Kalaw was built as a hill resort by the British seeking respite from the high temperatures of Yangon and Mandalay. At Kalaw and in its vicinity, you will enjoy the picturesque green landscapes, the welcoming atmosphere and witness the way of life of different mountain tribes wearing remarkable traditional clothing. On arrival, lunch at local restaurant and check-in at hotel.

Day 4    KALAW–GREEN HILL VALLEY–KALAW                          (B/L)
After breakfast, welcome by the local guide and start half-day walk to reach the elephant camp of Green Hill Valley. On-site meet the mahouts and take part in the daily care of the animals, feeding and bathing them. This activity is very different from the elephant shows or rides that can be found elsewhere in Asia. Elephants here are cared for by Tun Tun, his veterinary uncle and their team of mahouts on a private natural reserve also home to butterflies, orchids and colorful birds. Beyond the tourist attraction, visitors learn how to to feed and bathe elephants in the river and spend quality time with these giant but tender animals. The visit ends with a delicious Kalaw Indian meal, overlooking the lush
valley. In the afternoon, return to hotel (45 minutes).

Day 5     KALAW–INLE LAKE                          (B/L)
After breakfast, stroll through Kalaw’s local market. Board the local train towards the town of Shwe Nyaung (caution: train schedules are random, if waiting is too long, the trip will be arranged by road). The train ride between Kalaw and Shwe Nyaung last approximately 4 hours. This picturesque trip will allow the visitor to mingle with the locals and witness their daily life. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of smiling peddlers, the rustic train rocks passengers back and forth, patience and a sense of humor are necessary to fully enjoy this experience! From arrival railway station, transfer to Nyaung Shwe (approximately 45 min). Enjoy a walk in teh village before a late lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, transfer and checkin at hotel. If time permits, depart for 21 Production valid from October 01st 2017 to April 30th 2018 a first exploration of Inle Lake and its surroundings on board of a motorboat.

Day 6     INLE LAKE                          (B/L)
After breakfast, depart for a full day exploration of Inle Lake and its surroundings on board of a motorboat. Located more than 800 meters above sea level, this freshwater lake is surrounded by green hills, a true natural jewel. The inhabitants of the lake, called "Inthas", have developed very particular techniques of navigation, fishing and agriculture. Visit Indein village located on the Lakes’ bank. Hundreds of ancient pagodas dating from the 15th century are hidden there among the natural surroundings. Lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, stop at weaving villages, floating gardens, Ngaphe Chaung monastery and Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda.

Day 7     INLE LAKE–SAGAR–INLE LAKE                          (B/L)
After breakfast, depart by motorboat to Sagar, in the heart of the Shan State. Along the journey, the boat passes several lake villages, including those of the Shan, Pa-O and Intha minorities. Observe the life style of its inhabitants and the unique style of fishermen rowing the boat by standing and rolling one leg around the paddle while holding their cone shape fishing basket. Stop at the Taung Toe Village where one can see several 16th century pagodas. Arrive in Sagar after 4 hours cruise, a forgotten archeological site, on the south of Inle Lake. Sagar was flooded in the middle of the 20th century. The impressive remains of a majestic past are nestled in the hills or buried under water: stupas, temples and pagodas taken over by wilderness are prisoners of time and vegetation. Lunch is during excursion.

Day 8     LAC INLE–HEHO/YANGON                          (B/L)
After breakfast, transfer to Heho Airport for the flight to Yangon. Welcome at the airport by the local guide. A short orientation tour is arranged to have a glimpse of the unique charm of the capital. Visit Sule Pagoda, the Chinese and Indian quarters. Walk in the colonial area to discover its ancient buildings: the old post office, the famous Strand hotel and Yangon’s harbor. Lunch at local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Chauk Htet Gyi pagoda known for its famous Reclining Buddha with extravagant dimensions. End the day by the visit of the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda, with its golden dome dominating the skyline of the city. The site is considered as one of the most important pilgrimage sites in South-East Asia.
Overnight in Yangon.

Day 9     YANGON                          (B)
After breakfast, free time shopping at the Bogyoke Market (closed on Mondays and holidays).
Note: Rooms shall be released by 12pm (noon). Depending on the flight schedule, transfer to the airport for the departure flight.
