Religions & spirituality escapade in Chiang Mai, 4 days

Upon arrival, welcome by the local guide at Chiang Mai airport, transfer and check-in at the hotel. Note: Rooms are available from 2pm. Tour of the old town by rickshaw starting with a large local market, the flower market and the main street: Tape. Stop to observe a  “Spirits’ House”, designed according typical wooden thai old houses. These houses are essential to protect a home or a building, and receive daily offerings to ward off evil spirits. Among the many temples in the city, visit the Wat Chedi Luang temple and its large chedi that was built in the late fourteenth century by King Saen Muang Ma. Then visit Wat Phra Singh temple built by King Pha Yu to honor relics of his father King Kam Fu Kinh.

Day 2      CHIANG MAI: MEETING WITH A KAREN TRIBE                        (B/L)   
After breakfast, spend a full day exploring Doi Inthanon national park, the highest mountain in Thailand (2,565m). Stop at the top to visit the mausoleum dedicated to a former prince of Chiang Mai, followed by a short walk. Visit the Great twin pagodas erected in honor of Their Majesties the King and Queen and enjoy a unique panoramic view. Lunch during excursion. In the afternoon, visit the Doi Intanon Royal Project, one of the many projects initiated by the King dedicated to familiarize the mountains tribes with new agricultural techniques. Finally, stop in a village home of the Karen tribe, one of the few ethnic groups in the country to practice Christianity. Return to hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 3     CHIANG MAI: MONKS PROCESSION & VISIT DOI SUTHEP                          (B/L) 
In the early morning, depart from the hotel to attend the daily monks’ procession. The people of Chiang Mai offer food daily to the procession (rice, cakes, fruits ...). Return to the hotel. After breakfast, visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of most important Chiang Mai’s landmarks where sacred Buddha relics are preserved in a golden stupa. Inspired by Buddhism and Hinduism, the sanctuary consists in 306-step-entrance leading to the main stupa originally plated copper and coated with gold today. Afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the hotel or to continue exploring the city. The day ends by a meeting with monks who share their knowledge about Buddhism and Thai culture.

Note: The meeting with the monks can only take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Day 4     CHIANG MAI: BLESSING CEREMONY                           (B)      
After breakfast, visit Umong temple, built in the fourteenth century, it is now surrounded by lush vegetation. Stroll through mysterious tunnels into the hall of sermons: the Viharn. The morning ends with a blessing ceremony. Note: Rooms shall be released by 12pm (noon). Depending on the flight schedule, transfer to the airport for the departure the flight.
